Hello everyone and welcome to Talking the WCASD Way. I'm your host, and today's episode is a little bit different from our usual conversations. Throughout this year, we've had the privilege of sitting down with students, staff, families, and community partners to explore the stories, experiences, and initiative that make the Westchester Area School District such a special place to learn, to work, and to grow. We've celebrated accomplishments, highlighted innovative programs, we've discussed important priorities, and most importantly, we've elevated the voices of the people who bring our district to life each and every day. As we close out this phenomenal first, well, I think it's phenomenal, this first season of our podcast, I wanted to take some time to reflect on what we've learned together. Rather than focusing on any one episode in particular, today's conversations is about the themes that connected so many of our episodes, the power of stakeholder voice, the importance of meaningful relationships, our commitment to preparing students for the future, and the many ways our community comes together to support our learners. So you've listened to every episode, or if you're just joining us for the first time, thank you for being a part of this journey. It needs so much. Let's take a look back at some of the moments, the lessons, and the themes that defined our year together and that continue to shape what it means to do things the Westchester way. So one of the things that I think is really cool about the podcast, we wanted to focus on how we could elevate student voice and particularly the many voices across our district. There are so many people doing amazing things each and every day. And we wanted to have a way to highlight what goodness, and not in a way that was ours, but in a way that was theirs. So I think one of the greatest successes of the podcast has been creating a space for voices to be shared and heard from the individuals themselves, from the students, from the teachers, from the community members, from our parents. That's what makes our community special. And I think that we were able to showcase that. I think it's important to highlight the uniqueness that captures everyone's story, their experience, and most importantly, their why, what drives them, what's important to them in their own words. So I think being able to elevate the voices across our district has definitely been a theme of our podcast as we've engaged throughout the year. I think the other thing, I don't know if you if you've gotten tired of it, but I certainly haven't, and that is been engaging in all things portrait of a graduate. Every podcast episode definitely touched on our portrait of a graduate. And rightly so, because we are super excited about this work. We compiled those competencies and we we were able to just synthesize them down to five core themes. And we are super proud of the work that we did because it was that of our stakeholders, it was that of our community. So this year for Portrait of a Graduate, our focus was making sure that everyone knew that we had a portrait, that it was new, and they understood what our five competencies are: responsibility, empathy, communication, adaptability, and problem solving. And so one of the things we wanted to do is we wanted to remind our listeners, and we also wanted to hold ourselves accountable with ensuring that our portrait is connected to everything. If we're talking about programming for students, if we're talking about big picture planning, if we're talking about internships or receiving families into the district, our portrait is our North Star. So that is something that I'm really proud and pleased that we had an opportunity to give people time and space to say, this is how we think the portrait should look like, or this is how we think we should live it in the Westchester area school district in a way that was unique, authentic, and very much their own. And I have to say, I am blown away and super proud of the pride that's come from people to say, this is what it looks like in my classroom, or I tried this really cool thing, or this is how I see students demonstrating empathy or problem solving. Whatever the case is, Portrait of a Graduate was definitely a highlight in our podcast series this year. Another thing I'm super, super excited about is celebration. If you know me, you know that I love, love, love, love a good time. And I also want to make sure that the people that are doing the hard work get the shine, get the spotlight, particularly for our educators and our administrators, because they're always celebrating someone else. They're always spotlighting our students and the great work that's happening in our schools or in our community. But it's really important for us to have a space where we got to shout them out to say, you're amazing, and we want you to show that with everyone that's listening or everyone that's watching. So celebrating learning, achievement, and opportunity. I think that the podcast became a platform for people to share all the great opportunities and the greatness across our district. We were able to highlight stories at the elementary level, at the secondary level, things that are happening once students are beyond the walls of the district, what that impact looks like across our community. So being able to say, we have great people here. There's great work happening for our kids, and we just want to be able to give you some time to share in our story. I'm super proud of how people were able to take a table. If it was this one or wherever we were to say, this is what we're doing, we want to share, we want to highlight, we want to make sure you know the goodness of what's happening in our district. Um, that's definitely been a theme and a priority for us that was definitely loud and clear across our time together this year. And I think one of the things that's really important is that it takes all of us. There were so many different roles and stakeholders that were represented. It's not just one position or one school or one kind of profile. It's the uniqueness of everyone coming together as one collective community that was super special. I have to tell you, this podcast became a favorite part of my job. In the beginning, it's a little bit nerve-wracking where you're thinking about what's my hair look like? What am I wearing? Where are the mics going to go? But I genuinely was excited to connect with folks that I normally wouldn't be able to in such an up close and a personal and an intimate way. But the thing that gave me the greatest joy was for people to be able to have the time and a space to talk about what they love. So I just have to say how grateful I am for people to share, to be vulnerable, to say, I'm excited about this. This is working, or this not so much. And we had to tweak and adjust to revise this, or for people to say how they've had an idea and be able to come to life. That's been something that I think has been a through line for how we work together and the ways that a podcast can help us to strengthen our community. It's all about storytelling. And I think that we have so much that pulls us in different directions. You know, you don't want another email, you don't want something you have to read, but there's something that seems to be um reassuring, and there's something that seems to be comfortable with folks being able to say, I can tune in and I can listen and I can say, you know what, there's some good stuff going on. Or I didn't know about that. I just learned something new. The other thing that I think is great about showcasing our community is that we have so many people, not just listening, but watching, watching and wanting to see the faces and the people that make our district so special, so unique, and to really tune in and say, how are we, how are we walking the Westchester way? So I think that there's a level of connection that builds. I've had people email me or text me, be like, I I love coming in to work in the morning and listening to your podcast on Wednesdays, or I love being able to tune in, or I click the uh the the YouTube button on the newsletter and I was able to see, like, oh, I didn't realize that. So I just appreciate the stories that have been highlighted and shared and the many ways that our community is great. And also to be a part of either listening or you're watching, and for you to be able to say there's something new that's a point of pride in our district. So I will say this this year has been phenomenal. I think it's important to really lean in to things that bring you joy. I didn't realize this would bring me so much joy, but this year it has been a delight. And I have to say, I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout out to the many people that are behind the scenes, but do all the things that make this come together, especially to Molly for all of her work from a communications manager. She is just seamless in making sure that I look presentable and sound great. And also to Hilda, my assistant. Hilda is phenomenal with scheduling, getting the room set up, making sure that people have questions so they can come and feel prepared to share their story. So a special thank you to those two individuals and a special thank you to all of you because you've made a priority to listen. We can see where people are listening from, what states, what countries, and it's been all over the world. So it's a highlight when people get to be guests and they want to share with their family members or they want to share with their school community or they just want to put it out there, um, or not, because I'm like, oh my gosh, I don't want to see myself on video. But whatever it is, I just have to say it's been a delight just being able to share what we love to do and just shout out the people that make what we do so worthwhile. Now, as we close out this year, we're not done. You can't start something phenomenal and then stop. No, we're gonna keep going. And it is, it's gonna be more, more ideas, more of listening to what you want to hear about, what you want to learn about, what you want to talk about. Because I think that's important. It's not just us saying, like, what are the things that we are gonna share that everyone's gonna agree with and be happy about? What are the things that we're trying exploring? What are the things that we're embarking on and maybe not so sure about, but we do feel confident this is the right direction. We want to do more of that. So this year's episodes were not ending, they're a part of an ongoing journey. We really want to be able to listen and lean into the stories, the experiences, the topics that you want to learn more about. And the one thing that I will say is we want to hear more from our students. It's really important for us to lean into our students to hear firsthand for their experiences. So that's a highlight, that's a promise that we make to you as we close out this year and we prepare for the next series. We will definitely have more kid voices because I think that that's that's what keeps us honest. That's what keeps us focused on making sure that we're future ready, making sure that our priorities are right up front, but more importantly, making sure that we're invested in what's most important, and that is our students. So thank you so much for a phenomenal year for listening as you're riding along, walking along, if you're um in your kitchen cooking dinner or whatever, you've been a part of our journey, and we couldn't be where we are if you weren't tuned in. So thank you so much. If there is one lesson I will say that we've learned, it's that every member of our community has a story that's worth hearing and sharing. And oftentimes folks are like, you want me to talk about that? Like, is that good enough? Absolutely. We have to do a better job of highlighting and bragging because there is so much greatness. So we want to say thank you for joining us on this journey, for listening, for learning, and for helping us to continue to tell our story of what it means to do things the Westchester way. Until next year, have a great summer because our district is full of stories.
